The Council of the European Union has decided to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians who fled the country due to the full-scale war. The new protection period is until March 4, 2027.
This is reported by Suspilne with reference to the official EU decision adopted on July 15, 2025, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The European Union used the provisions of special legislation that allows for the extension of temporary protection if there is a threat to life or massive human rights violations in the country of origin.
The EU Council statement emphasizes that Russia’s war against Ukraine continues, and the security situation in the region remains extremely unstable.
Today, more than 4.3 million Ukrainian citizens are under temporary protection in EU member states.
What does temporary protection entail?
- the right to legal residence
- access to the labor market;
- access to education;
- access to medical services and basic social protection;
- simplified procedures for obtaining assistance.
In addition, the EU countries will continue to coordinate and exchange information to avoid situations where one person has simultaneous status in several countries.
The Temporary Protection Mechanism was activated by the EU in March 2022 for the first time in history. Its purpose was to provide immediate and effective support to people fleeing the war in Ukraine. Since then, the protection regime has been extended several times – most recently until March 2025, and now for another two years.
At the same time, EU countries are discussing reforms of social support – in particular, in Germany, the government plans to change the approach to assistance so that it goes only to those who really need it.
