EU suspends Georgia’s accession procedure

At a summit in Brussels, the leaders of the European Union officially announced that Georgia’s accession to the EU has been effectively suspended. This is stated in the final document of the European Council meeting, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
The document notes that the European Council reaffirms the EU’s readiness to support the Georgian people on their European path.
“At the same time, it reiterates its serious concern about the course of action taken by the Georgian government, which contradicts the values and principles on which the EU is founded,” the document says.
The European Council recalled that such a course of action jeopardises Georgia’s European path and de facto halts the EU accession process.
The Council called on Georgia to make the upcoming parliamentary elections free and fair, in line with international standards and with unimpeded access for international and domestic election observers.
“The European Council reaffirms the European Union’s continued support for Georgia’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders,” the document says.
It should be noted that on 27 June, the European Council published a statement on its website that the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence (on foreign agents) adopted in Georgia is a deviation from the steps set out in the Commission’s recommendation to grant the country EU candidate status.
