EU to respond to Russian drone attack on Poland with sanctions

11 September 2025 06:39

The European Union has strongly condemned the deliberate violation of EU member state airspace by Russian drones on September 10. In an official statement issued on behalf of all 27 EU member states, Russia’s actions were called an “aggressive and reckless act” that constitutes a serious escalation, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the deliberate violation of the airspace of an EU member state by Russian drones. This aggressive and irresponsible step threatens the safety of EU citizens, regional stability and international peace,” the document says.

Support for Ukraine and solidarity with Poland

Brussels emphasized that this attack only strengthens the EU’s determination to help Ukraine fight Russian aggression and support its aspirations for a just and lasting peace.

They also emphasized solidarity with Poland, where the incident took place:

“We stand in full solidarity with Poland and continue to provide the support necessary to secure its eastern border. We are in constant close contact with the Polish authorities.”

Sanctions against Russia

The EU has declared its readiness to further raise the cost of war for the Kremlin by increasing economic pressure:

“We will significantly strengthen sanctions against Russia and those who support it. Together with our international partners, we will put pressure on Moscow to end this war.”

Not the first incident

This violation was the latest in a series of cases of violations of the sovereign airspace of EU member states since 2022.

European diplomats have emphasized that each such incident is a challenge not only to a single state but also to the security of the entire European Union.

Russian drone attack on Poland

on September 10, 2025, Poland reported a violation of its airspace by Russian drones during a massive attack on Ukraine.

Drones that could pose a threat were destroyed. The incident took place in several regions of Poland:

  • Czosnówka near Biała Podlaska
  • A residential building in Wyrzyka, Lublin Oblast
  • Near Mnyszkow (Łódź Voivodeship)
  • At the cemetery in Ciesznyky (Lubelskie Voivodeship).

As a result of the incident , Poland activated consultations under NATO Article 4, which indicates a serious escalation of the situation.

NATO does not recognize drones in Poland as an attack by Russia

NATO does not consider the intrusion of Russian drones into Poland last night as an attack on an Alliance member state, Reuters reports, citing a NATO source.

According to the source, initial reports indicate “a deliberate intrusion of six to ten Russian drones.”

“This was the first time that NATO aircraft attacked potentially dangerous targets in the ally’s airspace,” the source said.

Nevertheless, the source added, “NATO does not consider the invasion of Russian drones into Poland to be an attack.”

It is indicated that Polish F-16 fighters, Dutch F-35s, Italian AWACS long-range radar detection aircraft and refueling aircraft under NATO control took part in the drone destruction operation.

Meanwhile, a NATO spokesman released an official statement on the Russian attack:

“Overnight, numerous drones entered Polish airspace and were met by Polish and NATO air defenses. The NATO Secretary General is in contact with the Polish leadership. NATO is in close consultation with Poland”.
