High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has called for respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty and supported a peaceful transition to democracy in the country after the US seizure of Nicolas Maduro. This follows from her statement – the official position of the European Union, published on the evening of Sunday, January 4, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports with reference to DW.
The statement reads that from the EU’s point of view, “Nicolas Maduro does not have the legitimacy of a democratically elected president.” At the same time, the EU stands for a peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela, which should be carried out by the Venezuelans themselves – with respect for the country’s sovereignty. According to the EU High Representative, respect for the will of the Venezuelan people is the only way to resolve the current crisis.
Callas noted that “under all circumstances, the principles of international law must be respected” and pointed to the special responsibility of the United States for upholding these principles as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
According to the text of the statement, the European Union considers it necessary to fight transnational organized crime and drug trafficking, but only “in full respect of the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
