The EU imposes duties on goods from the United States. What do we know?

The European Union will impose mirror duties on €26 billion worth of American goods. They will take effect in April.

This is how the EU will respond to the 25 percent duties imposed by the Donald Trump administration on all steel and aluminum imports. They come into force on March 12.
The list of goods from the United States that will be subject to the duties includes whiskey, motorcycles, boats, as well as industrial and agricultural products: steel and aluminum, textiles, plastics, household appliances, beef, poultry, eggs, dairy products, sugar, and vegetables.
“The Commission regrets the US decision to impose such tariffs, considering them unjustified and undermining transatlantic trade and harming businesses and consumers, often leading to higher prices,” the European Commission said.
The EU will now launch a two-week consultation on the selection of other product categories.
However, the European Union emphasizes its readiness for negotiations, as it considers such duties to be burdensome for the economies of the bloc and the United States.
What do we know about Trump’s imposition of duties?
on January 20, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of a 25% duty on imports from Mexico and Canada starting February 1. In response, Canada imposed a 25% duty on goods from the United States. Then the US postponed the duties from Canada and Mexico, but only for a month.
on February 4, China announces new tariffs on US imports in response to new US tariffs on Chinese goods. China imposes 15% tariffs on imports of coal and liquefied natural gas from the United States, as well as 10% duties on imports of oil and other American goods, including cars and agricultural machinery.
on February 10, Trump signs executive orders to increase tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports to 25% without exception. They apply to all countries and will take effect on March 12. Signing the decrees, Trump said that it was “a great thing to make America great again.”
The European Commission emphasized that the introduction of tariffs would be illegal and economically counterproductive, especially given the “deeply integrated production chains that the EU and the US have created through transatlantic trade and investment.”
