Europe puts an end to the Russian gas: by 2028, the EU will completely abandon Russian gas

The EU Council has adopted a common position on phasing out Russian gas imports as part of the REPowerEU plan, which provides for a complete rejection of Russian energy by January 1, 2028.
This is stated on the website of the EU Council, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to the agreement, a complete ban on imports of Russian gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) will take effect on January 1, 2028. By this time, EU countries will have to gradually wind down all contracts with Russian suppliers.
“An energy-independent Europe is a stronger and safer Europe,” said Danish Energy Minister Lars Aagaard, who presides over the EU Council.
Imports of Russian gas will be banned as early as 2026, but a transitional period is provided for existing contracts. Short-term contracts can be fulfilled until June 2026, and long-term contracts until January 2028.
To avoid Russian gas being supplied under the guise of other gas, the EU is introducing a system for verifying the origin of gas. Companies must submit documents in advance confirming that the fuel does not come from Russia.
Each EU country also has to prepare a plan for diversifying energy supplies, i.e. explain how it will replace Russian gas with other sources.
The next step is for the EU Council to negotiate with the European Parliament to finalize the new rules.
