The EU continues sanctions pressure on Russia: a new, 19th package of restrictions has been adopted
23 October 10:13
The European Union has approved a new, 19th package of sanctions against Russia, which includes measures against the so-called “shadow fleet” of oil tankers and a ban on imports of liquefied natural gas. The new sanctions will come into effect on January 1 2026.
This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the statement of the EU diplomat Kaja Kalals.
“We have just adopted our 19th package of sanctions. It targets, in particular, Russian banks, cryptocurrency exchanges, and companies in India and China,” she wrote.
The EU’s decision comes a day after the administration of US President Donald Trump announced new sanctions against the Russian oil industry. These measures are aimed at forcing Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table and ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
What will be included in the 19th package
The package includes a ban on imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia starting in January 2027, a year earlier than planned. In addition, the restrictions will affect Russian banks, financial institutions in Central Asia, and several crypto exchanges that help Russia circumvent sanctions.
The new package also includes trade restrictions against Chinese and Indian companies that helped Russia circumvent sanctions.
In addition, the European Union is imposing a ban on the export of goods worth more than 40 billion euros used in the Russian military industry, including minerals, ceramics, and rubber.
In addition, more than 100 oil tankers involved in the illegal trade in Russian oil have been added to the EU blacklist. The total number of vessels under sanctions will reach about 550.
As a reminder, following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on October 20, the head of the EU’s foreign policy service , Kaja Kallas, said that the EU plans to adopt the 19th package of anti-Russian sanctions by the end of the week.
Kallas noted that the package would be agreed upon before the summit of the community countries next Thursday, October 23.
