Trump nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for strikes on Iran
8 July 13:20
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize during his visit to the White House on Monday. He made the announcement at a dinner with U.S. officials, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Bloomberg. Netanyahu handed Trump a copy of a letter sent to the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee.
In his speech, Netanyahu emphasized that Trump is “forging peace right now” and added that this gesture from the Israeli leader is of particular importance. Trump responded by expressing his gratitude, noting that such support from the Israeli prime minister was particularly valuable to him.
According to the document, dated July 1, Netanyahu justified his nomination by saying that Trump’s efforts
“have brought dramatic changes and created new opportunities for expanding the circle of peace and normalizing relations.”
As a key example, he cited the Abraham Accords, which during Trump’s first presidency helped normalize Israel’s relations with the UAE, Bahrain, and other Arab countries.
This is Netanyahu’s third visit to the White House since Trump returned to power in January 2025. The meeting took place against the backdrop of active American efforts to achieve a truce in the Gaza Strip and continued pressure on Iran to return to negotiations.

Geopolitical context
Netanyahu’s visit took place after the end of the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, in which the United States actively supported the Israeli side. American forces launched missile strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, although a full assessment of the damage is still ongoing, and the location of Iran’s enriched uranium reserves remains uncertain.
Trump said that negotiations between the US and Iran would take place in the near future – within a week. The American leader expressed his readiness to lift sanctions against Iran “at the right time” to give the country a chance for peaceful reconstruction if it stops its anti-American and anti-Israeli rhetoric.
Netanyahu is not the first foreign leader to nominate Trump for the Nobel Prize. Last month, Pakistan made a similar announcement, which underscores the strategy of foreign leaders to use praise to achieve their political goals in relations with the American president.
At the same time, negotiations to end the war in Gaza are actively progressing. Trump said that a truce could be “close,” and Netanyahu agreed to the American proposal for a 60-day pause in hostilities and the release of some hostages. Hamas also responded positively to this proposal.
Trump’s peacekeeping efforts in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict are also known, but his position and actions in this regard are difficult to assess unequivocally. In any case, the war does not seem close to ending.

Nobel Peace Prize
The Nobel Peace Prize, which has been awarded since 1901, is the most politically charged and controversial of all the Nobel awards. Unlike the other categories, where the winners are selected by Swedish committees, the Peace Prize is awarded by a five-member Norwegian committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament.
The history of the prize is full of paradoxes and scandals. Barack Obama received the award in 2009 just nine months after taking office, which caused criticism even among his supporters. At the same time, Mahatma Gandhi, a symbol of peaceful resistance, never won the award, although he was nominated five times. Among the most controversial decisions was the awarding of the prize to Henry Kissinger in 1973 during the Vietnam War, which led to the resignation of two committee members in protest.
Only certain categories of people are eligible to nominate candidates: heads of state and government, members of parliaments, judges of international courts, professors of political science and international law, and previous laureates. Interestingly, self-nomination is prohibited, and the names of the nominees are kept secret for 50 years. Each year, about 200-300 nominations are received, among which there may be both serious candidates and openly populist applications.
Trump has already been nominated for the prize three times by various individuals, including a Norwegian MP in 2020 for his role in normalizing relations between Israel and Arab countries. His long-standing desire to win the Nobel Prize has become a well-known fact, especially since his predecessor Obama won it. This creates additional intrigue around the current nomination from Netanyahu, who clearly understands the psychological significance of such a gesture for the American leader.
