North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said that the country plans to increase the number of nuclear weapons exponentially to protect itself from threats. The politician said this at a reception on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK, reports "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Munhwa Bangsong Jushikhoesa.
“We are steadily pursuing a policy of building a nuclear force that will exponentially increase the number of nuclear weapons,” Kim Jong-un said.
He stressed that “mighty power is true peace and an absolute guarantee of … national development” and added that the DPRK will continue to strengthen its nuclear capabilities to respond thoroughly to any threatening actions by “hostile” countries with nuclear weapons.
Kim also stressed that North Korea’s possession of nuclear weapons is a minimum deterrent to survive external attacks.
During his speech, Kim Jong-un tried to assure that North Korea’s nuclear weapons do not pose a threat to other countries. In particular, he said the following:
“We are constantly under a serious nuclear threat, but the nuclear weapons that we have to defend do not pose a threat to anyone.”
The DPRK first openly announced the development of nuclear weapons in February 2005. Since then, there have been several missile tests conducted by the country. They took place in 2006, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2017.
