Green industry in Ukrainian: first eco-standard for industrial zones approved

20 June 2025 16:48

Ukraine has become a pioneer in Europe and the second country in the world to officially approve a national standard for eco-industrial parks. The new document contains clear requirements for the sustainable development of industrial zones, as well as criteria for assessing the effectiveness of management companies.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Economy, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

What does the standard envisage?
It establishes a rating system for assessing parks at three levels:

  • “gold”
  • “silver”
  • “bronze”.

It evaluates

  • efficiency of park management,
  • sustainability of production processes,
  • environmental impact.

The new rules will come into force on September 1, 2025, but they can already be used by both initiators and management companies of industrial parks.

Who supported the initiative?

The standard was developed within the framework of an international technical assistance project – the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Program in Ukraine, implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with funding from the Swiss government (SECO).

The official approval was formalized by the order of the State Enterprise “UkrNDNC” No. 95 dated June 5, 2025.

Why is it necessary?

Eco-industrial parks are clusters of enterprises that:

  • exchange energy, waste and resources,
  • promote decarbonization and efficient energy use,
  • support the growth of added value and increase the competitiveness of industry.

Their development is a key element of Ukraine’s economic transformation as part of the Ukraine Facility plan.

What’s next?

The next step will be the adoption of draft law No. 12117, developed by MPs Dmytro Kysylevskyi and Dmytro Natalukha, which will enshrine the principles of sustainable industrial development at the legislative level.
