Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with Axios that he is ready to leave the presidency after the war with Russia ends. He also said that he would initiate elections in Ukraine if a ceasefire is established, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“When asked whether he would consider his work done when the war is over, Zelensky said he would be ‘ready’ to resign. “My goal is to end the war,” not to continue running for office, he said,” the newspaper writes.

The President of Ukraine said that the possibility of holding elections may arise during the ceasefire. “We can use this period of time, and I can give a signal to the parliament” to start preparing for the elections, he said.

According to Zelenskyy, he understands that people may want “a leader with a… new mandate” to make the crucial decisions necessary to achieve peace.

At the same time, the Ukrainian president did not explicitly say that he could leave office during the hostilities or refuse to run for new elections.
