Zelensky does not rule out a scenario of division like after the Korean War

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine’s future directly depends on its focus on development, humanism, and support for its allies. At the same time, he does not rule out that the war could end in a scenario similar to the one that led to the division of Korea after the Korean War. He said this in an interview with the French edition of Le Point, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“This is an example of how values have won. The development of South Korea cannot be compared to the development of North Korea, where there is a real economic and civilizational decline. South Korea has made a leap forward in civilization, technology, and economy because it cultivates humanism. This is the most important thing for a state: you have to focus on people,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

The role of the United States and security issues

He added that the United States remains the main factor in South Korea’s security, providing military support and preventing the communist regime from gaining control of the southern territories.

“The South Koreans still face risks. Their economy is booming and they are secure, but as long as North Korea remains the way it is, South Korea will not be completely secure. And believe me, they have numerous air defense systems that guarantee their security,” the president said.

Separately, Zelenskyy emphasized the scale of the Russian threat, which, according to him, cannot be directly compared to the North Korean one.

“The threats from Russia are five, six, or even ten times greater. A complete replication of the South Korean model would probably not be suitable for Ukraine from a security perspective. On the other hand, its economic model is a good example,” he concluded.

What is the “Korean scenario”?

After the end of the Korean War (1950-1953), the parties did not conclude a peace treaty, which resulted in the actual division of the country. North Korea was ruled by the communist regime and plunged into stagnation and isolation. Instead, South Korea, with the support of the United States, has managed to build a powerful economy and technology sector and become one of the world’s examples of successful development.

According to Zelenskyy, a similar scenario is quite possible in Ukraine.

“You ask me if such a scenario can happen in Ukraine? I tell you that everything is possible,” the president frankly admitted.
