Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had an important phone conversation with US President Donald Trump. The main topic was peace in Ukraine and further cooperation between the two countries. Zelensky said this on the social network X, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Zelensky had an important conversation with Trump, which could be a turning point in the war with Russia. The leaders discussed concrete steps towards a ceasefire, including a halt to attacks on infrastructure and a complete truce on the front line. The meetings of the teams in Jeddah have already yielded first results, and new talks in Saudi Arabia are bringing Ukraine closer to a lasting peace. What exactly did Zelenskyy and Trump say and what are their plans for 2025? Let’s analyze the key points of their conversation.

Zelenskyy: “Together with the United States, we can end the war this year”

Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the conversation with Donald Trump “positive, meaningful and frank.” He thanked the American leader for the successful start of cooperation in Jeddah on March 11:

“I had a positive, very informative and frank conversation with US President Donald Trump. I thanked him for a good and productive start to the work of the Ukrainian and American teams in Jeddah on March 11. This meeting of the teams helped to make significant progress towards ending the war. We agreed that Ukraine and the United States should continue to work together to achieve a real end to the war and a lasting peace.”

Zelenskyy expressed optimism about the possibility of peace as early as 2025:

“We believe that together with America, with President Trump and thanks to American leadership, we can achieve a lasting peace this year.”

Steps to a ceasefire: what Trump offered Putin

President Trump shared with Zelenskyy the details of his conversation with Vladimir Putin, including an agreement to end attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure. Zelenskyy supported this initiative and confirmed Ukraine’s readiness to implement it:

“One of the first steps towards a complete end to the war may be to stop strikes on energy and other civilian infrastructure. I supported this step, and Ukraine confirmed that we are ready to implement it. Our teams discussed this step in Jeddah.”

Another proposal from the United States is an unconditional ceasefire on the front line. Zelenskyy noted:

“The American side has proposed an unconditional ceasefire on the front line, and Ukraine has also accepted this proposal. We will continue to work to make this happen.”

These steps, he said, are necessary to prepare for a comprehensive peace agreement.

Discussing military and humanitarian issues

During the conversation, the presidents also touched upon such important issues as the release of prisoners of war and the return of Ukrainian children who were illegally taken to Russia. Zelenskyy also provided an update on the situation at the front and the consequences of Russian strikes:

“I provided an update on the situation on the battlefield and the consequences of Russian strikes. We talked about the situation in the Kursk region, raised the issue of the release of prisoners of war and the return of Ukrainian children captured by Russian troops.”

Special attention was paid to strengthening air defense:

“We discussed the state of Ukraine’s air defense and the possibilities of strengthening it to protect people’s lives.”

Next steps: talks in Saudi Arabia

The leaders instructed their teams to work quickly on technical details. Zelenskyy emphasized:

“We instructed our teams to resolve technical issues related to the implementation and expansion of the partial ceasefire. The teams of Ukraine and the United States are ready to meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to continue coordinating steps towards peace.”

He noted the effectiveness of the advisors’ work: Marco Rubio, Mike Volz, and Keith Kellogg on the American side and Andriy Yermak, Andriy Sybiga, Oleksiy Umerov, and Olena Palisa on the Ukrainian side.

Gratitude and the concept of “peace through strength”

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Trump and the United States for their support:

“I thanked President Trump and the American people for their support. I emphasized that Ukrainians want peace, and that is why Ukraine accepted the proposal for an unconditional ceasefire.”

He also supported Trump’s idea of “peace through strength”:

“I emphasized the importance of President Trump’s concept of peace through strength. We agreed to maintain constant contact, in particular at the highest level and through our teams.”
