Zelenskyy Responds to Questions About an Easter Ceasefire: What Is Known
10 April 05:43
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine is ready to observe a ceasefire during the Easter holidays. The head of state announced this on his Telegram channel, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
According to the president, people need an Easter free of military threats, and for Russia, this period could be a chance to demonstrate a genuine desire for peace.
What Zelenskyy said about the Easter ceasefire
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine has repeatedly proposed various formats for a temporary ceasefire, including one for Easter. He stressed that the Ukrainian side is ready for reciprocal actions and views even a brief period of calm as an opportunity to move toward a peaceful settlement. According to him, a limited-time ceasefire would not allow either side to significantly alter its positions, but could serve as an important signal.
The President separately noted that people need an Easter free of threats, shelling, and the danger of war. In his view, the holiday period itself could serve as a test of Russia’s genuine willingness to at least temporarily cease fire and not resume attacks immediately after the holidays end.
The context of this statement
Zelenskyy’s statement came against the backdrop of Ukraine’s previous proposals for an Easter ceasefire. Earlier, the president had already reported that Kyiv had conveyed to the Kremlin an initiative to cease fire at least for the duration of the Easter holidays. At the same time, as early as April 9, the Ukrainian side stated that Moscow had not responded to this proposal.
During the same period , the Russian side had already announced a temporary ceasefire from 4:00 PM on April 11 until the end of the day on April 12, 2026. It was after this that Zelenskyy articulated Ukraine’s position on the Easter truce.
What does the principle of mirror actions mean?
Zelenskyy’s statement about readiness for mirror actions means that Ukraine will determine its own steps based on the Russian side’s actual behavior. This refers not only to formal statements, but primarily to whether the ceasefire on the front lines is actually observed. Kyiv is presenting this approach as a signal that Ukraine’s response will depend on Russia’s practical actions, not just its public promises.
Why the topic of an Easter truce matters
The Easter ceasefire has not only a military dimension but also a humanitarian and symbolic one. For millions of people, Easter is one of the most important holidays of the year, so the very possibility of even a brief pause in hostilities is seen as a chance for peace, prayer, and celebration without explosions and shelling. This is precisely what the president emphasized, saying that people need an Easter free from military threats.
