‘Tough evacuation’ in Myrnohrad: police will search for parents hiding children
20 August 2024 11:55
A difficult situation has arisen in Myrnohrad, Donetsk region, with the evacuation of civilians, especially children. This was reported on Radio Liberty by the acting head of the Myrnohrad city military administration, Yuriy Tretiak, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
According to him, some parents are trying to hide their children from evacuation. Cooperation with the police is planned to solve this problem:
“We have cases where parents hide their children. Today we will have a meeting with the police to discuss how we will work with such people, how we will search for such parents who hide children and give false information that the children have long since left.”
Tretiak noted that the authorities are planning to intensify door-to-door visits, especially in areas that are subject to regular shelling.
The situation in Myrnohrad is critical – the front line is less than 5km from the city. About 16,000 people still remain in the city, but authorities hope to reduce this number to less than 10,000 by the end of the week.
Residents have been warned that they have only a few days to evacuate.
Tretiak emphasises the need for a quick evacuation, warning that the situation is deteriorating:
“[Those who stay will] … live under constant shelling. Perhaps without water and without electricity. Therefore, I appeal to the residents of Myrnohrad and the Myrnohrad community: do not wait. It will not get better.”
The day before, it was decided to evacuate the city’s institutions and businesses, as well as close shops and markets.
Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk also called on citizens to evacuate Pokrovsk, Myrnohrad and Selidove, stressing that the presence of civilians complicates the work of the Defence Forces.
The Pokrovsk sector remains one of the hottest spots on the frontline, with the highest number of combat engagements over the past month.
