Demand is falling: Sales of Chinese cars have declined in Ukraine
17 March 11:24
In February 2026, the Ukrainian market for Chinese-made cars saw a significant decline. Over the course of the month, Ukrainians purchased only 466 passenger cars from China, which is nearly half as many as during the same period in 2025. This is according to data from the Ukravtoprom association, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian"
How sales of Chinese cars have changed
According to statistics, in February, Ukrainians purchased:
- 386 new cars (a 44% drop)
- 80 used cars (a 62% decrease)
The total decline in sales was 48% year-over-year.
What Chinese cars are Ukrainians buying
Interestingly, the sales mix has changed. While electric vehicles previously dominated the market, their share has now decreased significantly.
Sales structure in February 2026:
- electric vehicles — 38% (compared to 83% a year ago)
- gasoline cars — 29%
- hybrids — 28%
- diesel cars — 5%
This indicates a significant slowdown in demand specifically for Chinese electric cars.
The most popular new Chinese cars
Among new Chinese-made cars, the following models were in the highest demand:
- BYD Sea Lion 06 — 21 cars
- MG ZS — 19 cars
- Chery Tiggo 4 — 18 cars
- Jetour X50 — 17 cars
- BYD Qin — 16 cars.
The most popular used cars from China
Among imported used cars, the most frequently purchased were:
- Buick Envision — 13 cars
- Volvo S90 — 7 cars
- Audi Q4 — 7 cars
- BYD Song L — 6 cars
- BYD Song Plus — 5 cars.
Why is demand for Chinese cars falling?
In 2025, Chinese brands significantly expanded their presence in the Ukrainian market. This was partly due to the massive import of electric vehicles ahead of the expiration of tax incentives.
At that time, the share of Chinese cars among new vehicles exceeded 50%, and the BYD brand even topped the market.
However, in 2026, interest in Chinese electric cars began to decline. In particular, BYD, which was the sales leader last year, did not make it into the top ten most popular brands in February.
The overall situation in Ukraine’s car market
In total, Ukrainians purchased approximately 4,400 new passenger cars in February 2026, which is 10% less than a year ago.
Toyota became the most popular brand of the month, maintaining a stable position in the Ukrainian market.
