21 February 02:25
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have liberated 300 square kilometers of territory in the south during counterattacks. This was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with AFP, emphasizing the importance of the Defense Forces’ achievements amid the ongoing war, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
This is one of the most notable successes of the Ukrainian army in recent times, demonstrating the Armed Forces’ ability not only to repel Russian troops but also to retake occupied territories.
Zelensky confirmed the de-occupation: what is known about the liberation of territories
The President of Ukraine congratulated the military on the results of the hostilities and confirmed the liberation of a significant area.
“I will not go into too much detail… Today, I can congratulate our army, first and foremost, all the Defense Forces, because as of today, 300 square kilometers have been liberated,” Volodymyr Zelensky said.
The head of state did not specify specific settlements or areas for security reasons, but stressed that this was the result of counterattacks by the Ukrainian military.
This refers to the southern direction, where Russian troops were trying to advance, in particular towards the Dnipropetrovsk region.
The counterattacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine thwarted the plans of the Russian offensive
The day before, Vladislav Voloshin, spokesman for the Southern Defense Forces, reported that the Ukrainian military had launched a counterattack in the Oleksandrivka direction.
The main objectives of the operation were:
- to stop the advance of Russian troops
- prevent a breakthrough in the direction of the Dnipropetrovsk region
- to push back the occupying forces from previously captured positions
The counterattack not only stabilized the front, but also returned a significant amount of territory to Ukrainian control.

Russia is suffering huge losses on the front
According to the President of Ukraine, Russian troops are suffering heavy losses during combat operations.
The monthly losses of the Russian army are approximately:
- 30,000 to 35,000 soldiers
This significantly weakens the offensive potential of the occupying forces and complicates the implementation of their military plans.
The president stressed that despite the difficult situation, claims of Ukraine’s defeat are unfounded.
“Today, we cannot say that Ukraine is losing. The question is whether we will win. And this is a very costly question,” Zelensky said.
Deoccupation is of strategic importance for the front
The liberation of 300 square kilometers is of great strategic importance:
- it weakens the defensive positions of Russian troops
- complicates the logistics of the occupying forces
- reduces the threat to new regions, in particular the Dnipropetrovsk region
- improves Ukraine’s military and political position
In addition, the de-occupation of territories demonstrates the effectiveness of Ukraine’s defense strategy.
The issue of a peacekeeping contingent and ending the war
The President of Ukraine also said that Kyiv expects the international contingent to be deployed closer to the front line after the end of hostilities.
“We would like to see the contingent closer to the front line. Ukrainians would like our partners to stand with us on the front line,” Zelensky said.
This issue may become one of the key issues in future negotiations on ending the war.
