The US delegation held a meeting with European representatives in Kyiv, which was held in an extremely unpleasant and tense atmosphere. This was reported by the Financial Times, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to a senior European official, the participants described the tone of the discussion as “nauseating.”
The talks took place on November 21 at the residence of Julie Davis, the US Chargé d’Affaires in Ukraine. According to the FT, U.S. Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll told European ambassadors and other Western representatives that he hoped for a peaceful settlement and believed that the time had come for it. At the same time, he warned that the United States does not intend to be flexible on key issues and is not ready to discuss the details of its peace plan.
The source quoted the minister as saying that Ukraine, in his estimation, “is in a very bad position.” The American side also made it clear that the version of the agreement currently being offered to Kyiv is the best possible in the current circumstances.
After the meeting in Kyiv, European leaders began to hastily organize talks at the G20
The event at the residence of the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Ukraine intensified negotiations between European leaders who gathered at the G20 summit in Johannesburg. The meetings, which were attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, lasted until late at night.
The negotiators were trying to find a way to convince the US president to soften the demand for Ukraine to adopt a “peace plan.”
