In Chernihiv region, farmers have succeeded in growing unusual cubic watermelons. This year, the Yahidna Kraina farm managed to produce six such fruits – six times more than last year. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Cheline.
The co-owner of the farm, Serhiy Remenets, said that the experiments on growing square watermelons lasted two years. Last year they managed to grow only one such fruit, while this season the result has improved significantly.
“Yes, we grew the square watermelons ourselves. And we decided to give one away to our social media followers,”
– commented Remenets.
The farmer noted that out of the six watermelons grown, three have a perfect cubic shape, two are not quite perfect, and one remained round. Five watermelons have already been sold, and one is currently being raffled off on social media.
Serhiy Remenets admitted that he had not tasted his unusual products, as the watermelons were grown solely for their original shape. He jokingly suggested that next year the farm plans to grow 12 square watermelons.

Cubic watermelons come from Japan
The idea of growing cubic watermelons was borrowed from the Japanese experience, as cubic watermelons are a decorative variety of ordinary watermelons that were first introduced to Japan in the 1970s in Kagawa Prefecture. Farmers grow these fruits in special transparent plastic molds that give them a cubic shape. The purpose of this step was to facilitate transportation and storage: cubic watermelons are easy to put on shelves, they do not roll and take up less space.
The irony is that such watermelons are almost always not intended for consumption – they are harvested unripe to preserve their shape and aesthetic appearance. Because of this, their flesh is hard, low in sweetness, and sometimes completely unfit for consumption. Cubic watermelons are mostly sold as gifts or exotic souvenirs. In Japan, it is considered a symbol of status or refined taste.
The price of cubic watermelons is high – sometimes more than $100 per piece. In addition to cubic, Japanese farmers experimented with other shapes: heart, pyramid, and anime character faces. These watermelons are a prime example of Japanese creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to turn an ordinary product into art.
