Meet a new type of fraud – people are accused of treason

A new type of telephone fraud has been reported in Ternopil region, in which attackers intimidate people with accusations of treason. a 68-year-old resident of Ternopil fell victim to such scams and lost more than 400 thousand hryvnias, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports, citing a report from the National Police.
In early May, the woman received a call from an unknown person who introduced himself as a law enforcement officer. The fraudster told the Ternopil resident that a criminal case had been opened against her for high treason, allegedly for buying medicines from people from the temporarily occupied territories.
Using psychological pressure and intimidation with the seriousness of the charges, the offender convinced the frightened woman to “resolve the issue” by transferring money. The next day, the victim transferred USD 9100 and EUR 1000 to the specified electronic wallet.

Cybersecurity experts note that the use of the theme of treason in fraudulent schemes is a new tactic designed to provoke emotional reactions and fear among citizens in wartime. Such accusations cause particularly strong stress, preventing people from critically assessing the situation.
Criminal proceedings have been opened over the fraud, but the police have not reported any suspects being detained.
The police also remind that they never demand money transfers for “closing the case” and recommend that if you receive such calls, do not panic, end the conversation and contact them.
