Escalation in Iran: Canada issues urgent statement

13 January 22:26

The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent warning to citizens currently in Iran. The Canadian authorities strongly recommend leaving the country as soon as possible due to the sharp deterioration in the security situation and risks to foreigners. This was announced by the Canadian Foreign Ministry in an official statement posted on social network X, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Why Canada advises to leave Iran urgently

The ministry notes that the situation in Iran is rapidly escalating amid large-scale anti-government protests, violent crackdowns, and possible violence against foreign citizens.

Diplomats emphasize that the level of risk to the lives and safety of Canadians in the country is critically high.

“We urge all Canadian citizens to immediately review their plans to stay in Iran and arrange for a safe departure,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

What departure routes does the Foreign Ministry recommend?

Due to possible restrictions or dangers to air travel, the Canadian side advises leaving Iran by land. According to diplomats, the safest routes are currently:

  • through Armenia
  • through Turkey.

Citizens are advised to check the operation of border crossing points in advance and have alternative evacuation plans.

Protests and repression in Iran

According to human rights activists, anti-government protests in Iran have been going on for more than two weeks and have been accompanied by large-scale repression. International media reports indicate thousands of deaths, mass arrests, and the threat of death sentences for protesters.

It is reported that detained demonstrators may face summary execution, which further increases tensions in the country.

International reaction

Against the backdrop of events in Tehran and other cities, US President Donald Trump publicly called on Iranians not to stop protesting and also expressed his support for the protest movement.

His words provoked a sharp reaction from the Iranian authorities and further complicated the diplomatic situation.

Advice for Canadians remaining in the country

The Canadian Foreign Ministry emphasizes that citizens who remain in Iran for any reason should constantly monitor official reports, avoid large gatherings of people, and be prepared to leave immediately if the situation worsens.

It should be noted that on Monday, January 12, the US State Department issued an urgent warning to its citizens who are still in Iran, urging them to leave the country immediately.
