Deputy Head of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Mariana Bezuhla said she supports the idea of mobilising and serving in the army for women. She wrote about this in Telegram, according to Komersant ukrainskyi ![]()
The MP quoted Oksana Hryhorieva, the Gender Advisor to the Commander of the Land Forces, who said that “we must teach men and women to be ready for war”. Bezuhla wrote that she fully agreed with this.
“I support this, it is a reality. We will either come to this or be destroyed. There are no two types of citizens in the Constitution. The point is that all young people should undergo military training,”
– bezuhla wrote.
Political analyst Volodymyr Tsybulko considers such statements to be destructive and notes that Bezuhla regularly makes them. In addition, sometimes she puts people in danger with her words, he said.
“She is constantly making some destructive statements, and it looks like her personal revenge for not being considered a person and for not having any political perspective. But she does have a criminal perspective. If you look at some of her publications, where, for example, demining machines and locations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are shown, this entails criminal liability,”
– commented the political scientist in an exclusive commentary to Kommersant Ukrainian ![]()
However, such destruction, according to the expert, also gives good chances for the continuation of the political struggle.
“It seems to me that she is motivated by the motive of casting for the upcoming elections, she is looking for a place in the future parliament. If she can’t stay in politics through constructive actions, she has a chance through destructive ones. This is a kind of Natalia Vitrenko 2:0,”
– said Volodymyr Tsybulko.
Women on the military register
According to the Ministry of Defence’s Military Media Centre, as of January 2024, 45,587 women serve in the Ukrainian army, and the total number of women in the Armed Forces is over 62,000. More than 4,000 women soldiers are in the combat zone, and 13,487 have the status of combatants.

Currently, military registration of women in Ukraine is conducted only with their consent. The only exception is mandatory military registration for women who have a medical or pharmaceutical speciality. All other women can voluntarily register if their profession is related to the relevant military speciality listed by the Ministry of Defence.
The campaign to register women for military service began on 1 October 2023. The Ministry of Defence says that this process will be gradual and is expected to be completed in three years.
“…currently, there is no forced involvement of women in military service during mobilisation and there are no plans to do so in the future. All our female defenders serve exclusively on a voluntary basis,”
– the General Staff reported.
