Why the US blocked G7 statement on Russian strike on Sumy: details
15 April 16:02
The United States refused to support a statement by the Group of Seven (G7) condemning Russia’s deadly missile attack on Sumy on Palm Sunday, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Bloomberg.
The administration of US President Donald Trump told allies that it could not sign a statement condemning the attack because it was “working to preserve the space for peace talks” while meetings between the White House and the Kremlin were ongoing.
According to diplomatic sources, Canada, which holds the G7 presidency this year, told its allies that it would be impossible to adopt a joint statement without US support. So it’s obviously not going to happen.
The US Embassy in London declined to comment.
The G-7 statement was planned to say that the attack on Sumy was proof that Russia was determined to continue the war, according to drafts seen by Bloomberg.
President Trump characterized the attack as “terrible” but said that “Russia made a mistake” without explaining what he meant. He quickly shifted the blame to his predecessor, Joe Biden, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

On the morning of April 13, Palm Sunday, Russian troops launched a double missile attack on the center of Sumy, using ballistic missiles with cluster munitions.
The shelling took place at a time when the streets were packed with people, resulting in significant civilian casualties
According to the latest reports, at least 35 people were killed, including children, and the number of wounded has already reached 117, including 11 children. It was also reported that most of the victims were in a trolleybus that was passing by the site of the explosion.
The rockets hit two buildings of Sumy State University. A family of three was among the dead.
The shelling damaged residential and non-residential buildings and destroyed vehicles. Local authorities and rescuers continue to clean up the aftermath of the attack and provide assistance to the victims
The attack on Sumy took place two days after a five-hour meeting between Vladimir Putin and Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine.
In his address, Zelenskyy emphasized that after the attack on Sumy, nearly 50 countries and international organizations expressed support for Ukraine. He also noted that 34 days have passed since Trump’s proposal for a complete ceasefire, during which Russia continued to attack Ukraine.
