ANALYSIS

An explosion occurred near the village of Sosnovka in the Khabarovsk region of Russia, blocking the movement of goods on the Trans-Siberian Railway, a key railroad route connecting the Far East and the European part of Russia. The Defense Intelligence of Ukraine confirmed that this was the result of a special operation by Ukrainian military intelligence. [Kommersant] analyzed why the sabotage of one of the key transportation arteries of the Russian Federation is important not only for Russia itself, but also for Ukraine – from the impact on military transportation to the weakening of the enemy’s economy.

What Happened on the Trans-Siberian Railway

Late in the evening of November 13, an explosion occurred on a section of the highway near Sosnovka.

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine confirmed that it was the result of a special operation by Ukrainian military intelligence. As a result of the explosion, a freight train derailed and the railroad track was severely damaged.

The DIU released exclusive footage of the preparation of the operation, showing how the scouts worked to hit one of the most important logistics arteries of the aggressor state.

A freight train, which, according to experts, could have been transporting military cargo, was derailed.

The Kremlin’s special services, which are responsible for protecting strategic facilities, failed to prevent the sabotage.

The GUR stated that the operation was aimed at disrupting the supply of weapons and ammunition to the Russian army, in particular those that Russia receives from North Korea.

Why the Trans-Siberian Railway is a critical artery for Russia

Military expert Oleg Zhdanov in a commentary [Kommersant] said that the importance of the Trans-Siberian Railway for Russian military logistics cannot be overestimated.

“The fact is that the Trans-Siberian Railway is one of the arteries for supplying ammunition and weapons to the Russian army. The Soviet Union concentrated huge stocks of equipment and weapons in the Far East. There were no other railroad lines,” Zhdanov says.

Russia still does not have a full-fledged highway connecting the Far East with the central part of the country.

“By the way, there is no highway between the Far East and, say, the Urals. Putin is the third tsar to try to build this highway. But it is impossible because of the soil.
So the railroad is the only way, except for airplanes, but you can’t transport that much by air,” the expert said.

The railroad is the only way to transport large quantities of ammunition, equipment, spare parts and missile components.

“Therefore, it is very important,” Zhdanov emphasized.

North Korea is a key supplier of shells to Russia

The expert noted that all cargoes from the DPRK travel via the Trans-Siberian Railway. Disruption of the highway automatically disrupts the schedule of supplying Russian troops at the front.

“And we shouldn’t forget that North Korea is there, which has been providing up to 60 percent of the ammunition for Russian artillery. Well, today, as Mr. Skybytskyi says, they have halved the amount of ammunition they supply,” Zhdanov emphasized.

The virtual absence of alternatives makes the Trans-Siberian Railway critical for Russian military logistics As the military expert explains, the importance of this highway for the Russian army can hardly be overestimated:

“The Trans-Siberian Railway is the only artery that connects the Far East and the European part of the Russian Federation,” Zhdanov summarized.
