Is the Kursk Campaign of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Over? Expert confirms partial control of Suja by Russians

Ukrainian troops are gradually leaving the liberated Kursk region – this information is increasingly appearing in the media, social media, and Telegram channels on both sides, although the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine does not confirm it.

In particular, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported on March 10 that he was personally working in the Kursk operational zone, where enemies were being quickly destroyed by the Armed Forces. However, he did mention that “maneuvers” were taking place.

“Currently, there is no threat of encirclement of our units in the Kursk region. The units are taking timely measures to maneuver to favorable defense lines,”

– syrsky wrote on Telegram.

Meanwhile, Russian Telegram channels claim that Sudzha has been almost completely captured by the Russians, and the Russian flag has been raised over the city administration. However, there is no video evidence of this yet, and the “videos from Sudzha” look like this:

Ukrainians emphasize that the Russian occupation of Suji is still not displayed on the DeepState map.

However, an authoritative source claiming that some Ukrainian troops are leaving the Kursk region is Forbes.

“On February 25, a series of precision strikes by Russian drones knocked out dozens of Ukrainian vehicles along the main road to Suja… Two weeks later, it appears that the bulk of Ukrainian forces, including some of the heaviest brigades in the Ukrainian army, have evacuated Kursk and relocated to the Ukrainian side of the border,”

– forbes wrote yesterday, March 11.

"Komersant Ukrainian" asked Ukrainian military expert Dmitry Snegirev what is actually happening in Kursk region and whether Ukrainian troops are leaving.

The expert confirmed that the Russians are advancing, and a large part of Suja is already under their control. There is no encirclement of Ukrainian troops yet, but the Russians are trying their best to achieve it.

“There are attempts to block the logistics of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in order to create an operational encirclement. That is, they are trying not to let the units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces go directly to Sumy region,”

– snegiryov commented on the situation exclusively for .

According to him, the loss of Suzha makes it practically inappropriate for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to continue their presence in Kursk region.

“Up to 200 square kilometers remain under the control of the Ukrainian Defense Forces [in the Kursk region]. And, accordingly, the loss of Sudzha as a key point of Ukrainian presence in the Kursk region will reduce the very fact of this presence in the Kursk region to virtually zero,”

– says the expert.

He adds that the sharp intensification of the Russian offensive and the very nature of the fighting in the Kursk region may be related to the peace talks.

“Moreover, Trump is expected to have a phone conversation with Putin on Friday. The Russian side has stated that it will be more than a conversation,”

– the expert says.

At the same time, Snegiryov notes that the situation in the Kursk region has created preconditions for tactical successes of Ukrainian forces in other parts of the front, in particular in the Toretsk and Pokrovsk directions, where there are significant tactical successes of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

Therefore, it is very likely that the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Kursk campaign is coming to an end, and under the guise of “peace talks” Putin will be able to “sell” his people a victory in the form of a new occupation of Kursk.

The Kursk campaign of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

In August 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) launched a large-scale offensive against the Kursk region of Russia, which was the largest invasion of Russian territory since World War II. This operation allowed Ukraine to achieve significant success, capturing about 100 settlements and nearly 600 Russian soldiers.

Russia was forced to send its best units to the area. Elite units of the Airborne Forces, GRU special forces, and brigades that had previously participated in the fighting in Donbas were immediately deployed to the region. In addition, North Korea has sent about 10,000 troops to Russia to take part in the fighting on the side of Russia.

In addition, Russia has spent enormous resources on defense: the construction of fortification lines, massive transfer of equipment and ammunition. In addition, following its traditional tactics of carpet bombing, Russia practically scorched its own territory to the ground, trying to drive the Ukrainian armed forces out of it. Thus, the Kursk campaign became an important operation that had a significant impact on the development of events at the front.
