Kyiv in snow captivity: new rules for transport

16 February 00:58

Due to difficult weather conditions, Kiev restricted truck traffic on the evening of February 15 and asked residents to switch to the metro and buses.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing a Telegram post by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

According to the mayor, in order to reduce traffic congestion and allow municipal services to clear snow without hindrance, restrictions were imposed on heavy goods vehicles from 10 p.m. on February 15.

This decision was made in order to:

  • free up main roads for snow removal equipment;
  • prevent traffic jams involving trucks on inclines and narrow sections;
  • minimize the number of accidents involving large vehicles.

Klitschko stressed that these measures are temporary and will remain in effect until weather conditions stabilize.

The mayor urged drivers not to leave their cars on the side of the road so as not to hinder the work of special equipment, and to maintain a safe distance and speed.

Residents are advised to use public transport whenever possible, in particular the metro, which operates reliably during bad weather and allows them to avoid traffic jams during rush hour.

Rain and icy conditions are expected to continue throughout Monday. That is why the KMVA has urged pedestrians to

  • cross the road only at designated places (the braking distance of a car on a slippery road increases significantly);
  • be careful on sidewalks and avoid areas under building roofs (due to possible snowfall).

The authorities continue to monitor the situation. All municipal services are coordinated in a single center to ensure the normal functioning of Kyiv despite the February blizzard.
