Fesenko: Trump’s peace plan is a business deal, not a political decision

OPINION
US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, which provides for the recognition of Crimea as Russian, has become the center of international attention. Political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko said in an exclusive commentary for [comersant ] that he believes this approach is business, not political, and it could have serious consequences for Ukraine.
Fesenko notes that the Trump administration tried to keep the plan secret, but leaks, probably from the White House, made it public. According to the political scientist, this shows that even the Trump team understands the risks of this approach.
“Some people in the White House realized that this was a situation that could bury the negotiation process, so they deliberately went for leaks to create a conflict background,” Fesenko said.
Business approach to politics
The political scientist emphasizes that Trump approaches international issues as a businessman, not a politician. This is manifested in his attempts to “quietly” reach an agreement with Russia, without taking into account the public component of politics.
“He doesn’t understand that these are not business deals where you can make a secret deal. Politics is always public,” Fesenko said.

The role of Witkoff and Putin
Fesenko believes that the real author of Trump’s “peace plan” is US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who, together with Russian President Vladimir Putin, developed it, hoping to “quietly” force Ukraine to accept the terms. However, the publicity of the topic ruined these plans.
“Vitkoff, who is the real author of this plan, thought that everything could be done quietly, to quietly force Ukraine, but it didn’t work out quietly,” the political scientist says.
Ukraine’s position and international reaction
Ukraine categorically rejects the possibility of recognizing Crimea as Russian. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasizes that Crimea is an integral part of Ukraine. European partners also support Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
“We cannot agree to recognize Crimea as Russian. This is contrary to our Constitution and international law,” Zelenskyy said.
Historical parallels and risks
Fesenko draws parallels with Trump’s decision to recognize Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights, which shows his willingness to make similar compromises.
“Trump does not realize how important this is. And he is ready for such, to put it mildly, specific and inadequate compromises,” the political scientist believes.
According to the expert, Trump’s peace plan to recognize Crimea as Russian is unacceptable to Ukraine and its international partners. Trump’s approach, based on business logic, does not take into account political and legal reality. Ukraine continues to insist on respect for its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
“It was a risky game on their part, and they realized that it would blow up,” Fesenko emphasized.
Such initiatives, according to Fesenko, indicate not only the short-sightedness of Trump’s policy, but also the disregard for the historical context in which Ukraine is located. That is why it is critical to prevent any “quiet” compromises behind the back of Ukrainian society and the international legal community.
