A petition calling for the lifting of the US ban on arms transfers to the Azov brigade has received the required number of votes on the website of the President of Ukraine. Now the President of Ukraine is obliged to consider it, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

It is known that there is a special amendment in US law, introduced in 2015, which prohibits the use of US funds for any funding of the Azov regiment/brigade. This was done in the wake of accusations of the regiment’s far-right ideology.

“The 12th Azov Special Forces Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine is an important component of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During its existence, the brigade has repeatedly demonstrated its combat readiness by participating in the most fierce battles, including the defence of Mariupol in 2022. Azov’s soldiers have confirmed their high professionalism and motivation. The battalion’s main mission has always been to defend the homeland and fight aggressors,” the petition reads,

– the petition says.

Therefore, the petition calls on “the President of Ukraine to instruct the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to urgently negotiate with the United States government to lift these restrictions in order to provide the 12th Azov Special Forces Brigade with the necessary support.”

The petition was registered on 7 May, and today, 9 May, it has already reached the required 25,000 votes. The petition is now in the “under consideration” status.

“Despite the experience and professionalism of the brigade’s soldiers, the spread of Russian propaganda continues to restrict access to modern Western weapons and training for the 12th Azov Brigade,”

– the brigade believes.

The president is now obliged to consider it and report on his decision on the matter within ten days.
