Politico: EU discusses changing membership rules over Ukraine

20 October 10:21

The European Union is discussing changing the rules for the accession of new countries to speed up the admission of Ukraine.

The Politico newspaper writes about this with reference to sources, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The mechanism envisages that new countries will be able to join the EU without the right to vote, which “could make leaders like Viktor Orban in Hungary more accommodating to Ukraine’s accession to the bloc.”

The newspaper cites European diplomats familiar with the situation as saying that the proposal to change the rules of EU membership is at an early stage of development and must be approved by all EU countries.

The idea is that the new members will receive all the rights after the EU completely changes the system of functioning to make it more difficult for individual countries to veto decisions, Politico writes.

Ukraine and the European Union

In June 2022, Ukraine became a candidate for membership in the European Union. The leaders of all 27 EU member states voted for this decision, and in December 2023, they decided to start negotiations on its accession to the community. However, Hungary has been vocal in its opposition to Ukraine’s hasty accession to the EU.
