Putin declares readiness to respond with military force to any threats

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has officially declared Moscow’s readiness to respond with military force to any possible threats. This was reported by Russian propaganda media, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to him, Russia will take into account the fact that the deployment of US weapons in space will undermine Russia’s efforts to maintain strategic stability.

Proposal for an arms treaty

Putin has proposed to the United States that after February 5, 2026, the expiration date of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, it should extend compliance with the provisions of this document for another year. This proposal demonstrates Russia’s desire to minimize the complete absence of mutual guarantees of control over strategic weapons.

Context in light of geopolitical tensions

Putin’s decisions and statements take place against the backdrop of deteriorating relations with the West and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Moscow consistently interprets US actions, including the possible deployment of weapons in space, as a threat to its security and key interests.

Military activity and the prospect of escalation

Putin has also previously announced his intention to intensify strikes against Ukraine, in part because of the passivity of some Western leaders, such as Donald Trump. At the same time, he is unwilling to end the war, seeing it as a matter of his own political survival.

Possible consequences for global security

Putin’s statements against the backdrop of the expiration of the Strategic Arms Treaty raise concerns about the sustainability of global security and a return to the arms race. The continuation of compliance with the terms of the treaty, although proposed, remains in question due to the complicated relations between Russia and the United States.

The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) was signed in 2010 and was valid for 10 years with the possibility of extension. It regulates restrictions on the nuclear arsenals of two countries – Russia and the United States.

The deployment of weapons in space is a new area of military competition, which can significantly complicate the system of strategic stability, as it is difficult to control the use of space weapons.
