Snow and ice cover Ukraine: traffic restrictions imposed on the Kyiv–Chop highway

8 January 15:40

Road services across Ukraine have switched to enhanced mode of operation due to difficult weather conditions—heavy snowfall, ice, and rain. This was announced by Minister of Community and Territorial Development Oleksiy Kuleba, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to him, the bad weather has affected several regions at once, and the situation on the main highways remains dynamic.

Where the situation is most difficult

  • Western regions — heavy snowfall, special equipment is working on mountain passes.
  • North and center — black ice and freezing rain, with short-term traffic complications in some places.
  • East and northeast — rain and difficult weather conditions, which also affect traffic.

The bad weather is gradually moving through the Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, and Chernivtsi regions towards the Kyiv region.

Traffic restrictions

Due to deteriorating weather conditions, temporary restrictions are being introduced on one of the country’s key highways:

  • in Rivne region, traffic restrictions have been imposed on trucks on the M-06 Kyiv-Chop highway;
  • similar restrictions are in place in the Zhytomyr region in the direction of Rivne;
  • in Lviv region, traffic restrictions are possible in the direction of Rivne region.

Decisions are being made by regional headquarters for the elimination of the consequences of bad weather.

What the ministry says

According to Oleksiy Kuleba, road services are working around the clock to ensure road passability and the stable operation of critical infrastructure.

The minister urged drivers to refrain from long-distance travel unless absolutely necessary, stressing that in bad weather conditions, people’s safety remains the top priority.

We remind you that on January 7, heavy snowfall hampered traffic on the Kyiv-Chop highway, particularly on the section between Lviv and Zakarpattia regions and on the mountain pass.

Forecasters warn that difficult weather conditions may continue, so the situation on the roads requires increased attention.
