In January and February, Polish authorities deported 1,300 foreigners, including more than 80 Ukrainians. Most people are deported for transportation of illegal migrants and committing crimes in the country.
This was reported by Rzeczpospolita, citing data from the Polish Border Guard Service, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Who are the most deported?
Most of the deportees are citizens of Georgia (260) and Belarus (220). Also, 150 Moldovan citizens, 90 Colombians, and more than 80 Ukrainians were forcibly deported from Poland.
The publication writes that these data are similar to the numbers for the same period last year – but then the top three also included 60 Russians. In total, the country deported 700 foreigners during this period in 2024.
Poland deported, in particular, those who used the Balkan route for the mass transportation of illegal migrants, as well as those who committed repeated crimes in the country.
The Border Guard Service said that they deported mostly foreigners who posed a threat to “security and public order in Poland.” Usually, these are repeat offenders convicted of assault and battery. There are many drivers who have convictions for drunken driving and driving bans, which they often violate.
Citizens of Ukraine are brought to the Ukrainian border where they are handed over to local authorities, while citizens of other countries are first taken to special centers and then sent back home by plane.
Ukrainians in Poland
In May 2024, the then Ukrainian ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Zvarych, told Ukrinform in an interview that the number of Ukrainian citizens who arrived in Poland after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion had decreased.
Thus, more than 950 thousand Ukrainian citizens enjoyed temporary protection. While earlier this number reached 1.3 million.
In June of the same year, a survey showed that the number of people in Poland who had a more negative attitude toward refugees from Ukraine had increased. Among the main reasons are claims for social benefits and lack of gratitude for the assistance to Poles from Ukrainians.
