Stonehenge was built by humans: new research disproves the “glacial” theory

The stones for the British Stonehenge were probably delivered by humans rather than brought by glaciers, scientists from the University of Aberystwyth (Wales) have come to this conclusion. The study is published in the Journal for Archaeological Research, BBC reports , "Komersant Ukrainian".

In particular, we are talking about the so-called blue stones, which were installed on the Salisbury Plain about 5 thousand years ago. They come from the Pembrokeshire region in western Wales, 225 kilometers from the Stonehenge site. One of these boulders, discovered in 1924, is known as the Newall Stone.

Earlier, there was a debate among archaeologists whether these boulders were transported by humans or could have been brought in naturally, in particular by a glacier. However, Professor Richard Bevins and his team said they found no evidence to support the glacier’s movement as far south as Salisbury Plain.

“There’s no evidence that the glacier went that far,” Bevins said.

The researchers also rejected the assumption that the unusual shape of the Newall Stone is the result of glacial movement. They believe that it is just normal weathering and destruction over time. In addition, no similar boulders of the specific spotted dolerite were found on the path that the glacier was supposed to have taken. Instead, there are indications that the stones were quarried in Pembrokeshire and probably transported to the installation site.
