In Poland, a new memorial plaque has been installed on the mass grave of soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army on Mount Monastyr, where they were called “terrorists.”
This was reported by Zlubaczowa, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
It is not known who put the new sign. Probably, it was installed illegally, so Polish law enforcement officers are already dealing with the case.
The new memorial plaque has the following text:
“The mass grave of Ukrainians, members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, responsible for terror and genocide against the defenseless Polish, Ukrainian, and Jewish population. Lord God, have mercy on them and do not retaliate against them for the horrific acts they committed against their brothers. Forgiveness does not mean forgetting, but healing the pain.”
This is not the first act of vandalism.
The monument to the UPA soldiers, which was erected in the 1990s at the initiative of Ukraine, has been repeatedly vandalized. It honors the memory of Ukrainian soldiers who died in a battle with NKVD units in March 1945 in the Monastyrski woods.
In 2015, unknown persons smashed the plaque with the names of the UPA fighters, and painted the cross on the grave in Polish national colors and replaced Ukrainian symbols with Polish ones.
In 2020, the monument was again damaged by vandals: the damaged plaque was completely smashed and its fragments were thrown into a pit. After some time, a new, bilingual plaque was installed, without the names of UPA soldiers.
Reaction of the Ministers of Culture of Ukraine and the Republic of Poland.
“We strongly condemn the act of vandalism committed against one of the Ukrainian places of memory in Poland. Illegally installed inscriptions and signs must be removed immediately. This is a deliberate provocation that serves, among other things, the interests of the aggressor country, Russia, and aims to harm the constructive dialogue that has been going on between the two countries in recent months,” the ministers of Ukraine and Poland said in a statement.
The ministers also confirmed that the parties will continue to work to strengthen the strategic partnership and resolve existing issues through dialogue and mutual understanding. It is noted that all acts of vandalism against places of memory and burial are investigated by the relevant services.
