Ukraine and Syria have restored diplomatic relations, which were severed at the initiative of Kyiv.

The communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations was signed on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Syrian President for the Transitional Period Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Ukraine broke off diplomatic relations with Syria in 2022 due to Damascus’ decision to recognize the LPR and DPR.

on September 21, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in the United States to attend the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. The last documented visit of a Syrian president to the United States took place in the summer of 1967.

Prior to that, the Syrian authorities officially appealed to Russia to extradite former President Bashar al-Assad. According to Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, the country’s authorities want to try Assad.
