Tomatoes are getting cheaper in Ukraine: what are the reasons?
7 December 10:07
Ukrainian traders are reporting a new wave of declining prices for imported tomatoes. A short-term but noticeable price increase a week earlier was the impetus for a significant decline in demand for imported tomatoes, according to analysts of the EastFruit project, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The project experts also note that this week only a few batches of local greenhouse vegetables went on sale, as most of the country’s factories have already completed the season of regular turnover.
At the same time, this week, the supply of imported tomatoes to the Ukrainian market increased significantly, which led to a significant increase in the supply of products on the market. As a result, by the end of this week, wholesale prices for tomatoes decreased to 65-75 UAH/kg ($1.54-1.78/kg), which is on average 13% cheaper than at the end of the previous business week.
The main reason for the negative price trend in the greenhouse tomato segment is a sharp decline in demand for these products, as well as increased supply of imported vegetables, the quality of which did not always meet buyers’ expectations.
As of today, imported tomatoes are already on sale in Ukraine, on average 10% cheaper than in the same period last year. However, most representatives of wholesale companies do not rule out further price reductions. According to traders, if the current sales rate is maintained, they will be forced to continue to give in to buyers to prevent the accumulation of unsold products in warehouses.
