Visas are not for everyone: Trump imposes discriminatory health restrictions
9 November 08:11
The administration of US President Donald Trump has introduced new rules for consulates and embassies, according to which visas will not be issued for “special” reasons.
This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the CBS News publication.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has ordered consulate and embassy officials not to issue visas to elderly immigrants, as well as those with certain diseases, including diabetes and obesity.
According to a State Department cable sent abroad, such individuals may be considered a potential “public burden” due to possible health problems or age restrictions.
Expanded list of diseases
The new guidelines list conditions that may affect the decision to issue a visa: cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, cancer, diabetes, metabolic disorders, neurological and mental disorders.
Additional factors include obesity, which can trigger asthma, sleep apnea, and high blood pressure.
All of these conditions may require lengthy and expensive treatment, which, according to the US authorities, should be paid for without the involvement of US government resources.
Powers of visa officers
The new guidelines greatly expand the capabilities of visa officers in evaluating applicants.
They are instructed to find out whether the applicant has the means to pay for medical care, and based on this, make a decision on whether to issue a visa.
Experts note that such rules may make it difficult for a significant number of elderly people and people with chronic illnesses to enter the United States.
