On February 23, the European Union extended the sanctions imposed on Russia over the full-scale war in Ukraine for another year, until February 24, 2027. The decision was published in the Official Journal of the EU, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

“As long as the Russian Federation’s illegal actions continue to violate fundamental norms of international law, including, in particular, the prohibition on the use of force enshrined in Article 2(4) of the Charter of the United Nations, or international humanitarian law, it is appropriate to maintain all measures imposed by the Union,” the statement said.

It is noted that the decision will take effect on the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation — February 24, 2026.

In addition, the EU recalled the UN General Assembly Resolution of February 24, 2025. In particular, the document demands that Russia “immediately, completely, and unconditionally” withdraw all its troops from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and cease all military actions, including “attacks on the civilian population and civilian objects.”

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, the European Union has imposed 19 packages of sanctions against the occupying country. The latest package was finally approved in October and includes a ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas, as well as tighter restrictions on financial transactions with Rosneft and Gazpromneft.

On December 17, it became known that the European Commission is preparing a 20th package of sanctions. The new restrictions are expected to be approved before the anniversary. The sanctions will primarily affect the financial and energy sectors of the Russian Federation.
