When will meteorological spring arrive in Ukraine: weather forecasters’ prediction

23 February 13:57
ANALYSIS

Ukrainians are already feeling the first signs of warming, but meteorological spring has not yet arrived. This was stated in an exclusive comment to "Komersant Ukrainian" by weather forecaster Natalia Golenia, who explained when it will be possible to officially declare the end of winter.

According to her, spring is determined not by the calendar date, but by temperature indicators.

“Meteorological spring is when the average daily temperature finally crosses 0 degrees. That is, when it is higher for more than five days, we can consider it the beginning of spring,” the forecaster explained.

End of February: sub-zero temperatures at night and temperature fluctuations

Despite the gradual rise in temperature, night frosts will continue.

“We expect temperatures to rise, but at night we will still have sub-zero temperatures. That is, on February 26-27, the daytime temperature may be around zero — -1… 2 degrees,” Golenya noted.

Thus, at the end of February, Ukrainians can expect temperature swings: around zero or slightly above zero during the day and frost at night.

Early March: daytime temperatures up to 5 degrees

With the onset of March, nighttime temperatures will remain within the range of

  • -1…-6°C

However, during the day, thanks to sunny weather, thermometers may rise to:

  • 1… 3°C
  • 4… 5°C.

“At the beginning of March, nighttime temperatures will remain between one and six degrees below zero. Daytime temperatures may rise to three to four degrees, with a maximum of five degrees above zero,” the forecaster said.

A more significant warming is possible from March 5–6

According to preliminary calculations, from March 5–6, daytime temperatures may rise to:

  • 3…8°C
  • and up to 10°C in some places.

Minimum temperatures are forecast to be between 0 and 5°C.

“This is the maximum temperature. The minimum is from zero to five degrees Celsius. If it stays within five days, then we can talk about spring,” Golenya explained.

Why it is too early to talk about the arrival of spring

The forecaster emphasizes that even if the temperature rises above zero during the day, night frosts may continue in early and even mid-March.

“It’s still the first half of March and even mid-March. We can definitively say that spring has arrived when we have had five days with an average daily temperature above zero. When the average daily temperature is above zero for a week, it means that spring has arrived,” she concluded.
