A mock-up instead of a breakthrough: Russia unveils the Tu-454 amid the aviation crisis
13 April 19:25
A scale model of the new Tu-454 passenger aircraft was unveiled for the first time in Kazan, Russia—a project positioned as a competitor to modern long-haul airliners. However, experts are already questioning its feasibility given the crisis in Russia’s aviation industry.
What was presented
The model of the Tu-454 aircraft was presented by Tupolev at an industry forum in Kazan. The aircraft is planned as a wide-body long-haul jet. It is aimed at the segment dominated by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350. The project had previously received almost no publicity—it was only mentioned in presentations
In fact, this is the first public “materialization” of the idea.
Technical Concept
It is anticipated that the Tu-454 will be equipped with:
- PD-26 engines (a modification of the PD-35)
- capability for use in:
- long-haul flights
- large passenger capacity
However:
- the engine itself has not yet been confirmed as production-ready
- previous projects involving it (particularly international ones) have been scrapped
Why there are doubts
1. Only a mock-up, with no clear timeline
The following have not yet been announced:
- development timelines
- start of production
- certification
2. Competition with other projects
Russia is already attempting to launch:
- Tu-214 (modernized Soviet model)
- MC-21
Resources are being spread thin across several expensive programs
3. Breakdown of international cooperation
- China has withdrawn from the CR929 project
- Access to Western technologies is limited
This complicates the development of a competitive airliner.
The Russian aviation crisis
The situation in the industry appears systemic:
- aircraft production is 15 times below target
- serial projects are constantly being postponed
- the cost of new models is rising
In particular, the MC-21 program:
- is regularly postponed
- raises doubts about its competitiveness
What does this mean
For Russia
- an attempt to maintain its status as an aviation power
- but without access to global markets and technologies
For the market
- real competition with Boeing and Airbus is unlikely in the short term
For the Tu-454 project
- the risk of remaining a concept or a long-term construction project
