A record amount of money was taken from banks after reports of blocking accounts of “fugitives”

In January 2024, Ukrainians withdrew UAH 27.4 billion from their bank deposit accounts, the highest amount since February 2022. This is stated in the report of the National Bank of Ukraine, reports
As a result of this withdrawal, the volume of deposits in the banking system of Ukraine decreased by 2.5%, leaving UAH 1.05 trillion on the accounts.
If we take into account not only individuals but also businesses, the deposit outflow was 2.1% (UAH 49.2 billion), leaving UAH 2.35 trillion on deposits.
The record withdrawals came amid reports that the new draft law on mobilisation would include provisions for blocking accounts for “draft dodgers”. The document, which was approved by the Verkhovna Rada in the first reading, does contain provisions on blocking bank accounts and electronic money, seizure of funds and other valuables, and restrictions on the right to drive vehicles.
