After Usyk relinquished his belts: The WBA named Russian Gassiev the full champion
2 July 19:52
The World Boxing Association has promoted Russian boxer Murat Gassiev from the status of interim champion to full-fledged WBA heavyweight champion. This was reported on the WBA’s official website, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
This became possible following Oleksandr Usyk’s decision to vacate his championship belts.
The organization has already published an updated ranking, in which Gassiev is listed as the champion and Usyk has been removed from the list.
In July 2018, Usyk defeated Gassiev in a bout for the undisputed cruiserweight title. The fight took place in Moscow.
Gassiev’s next fight will take place on July 11 in Moscow against Frenchman Tony Yoka.
As a reminder, on June 26, Oleksandr Usyk vacated all his heavyweight championship belts. Later, the boxer stated that he is not retiring and is preparing for at least one major fight.
