On the border with Russia in the Chernihiv region, 2,400 hectares of forest are on fire due to shelling, according to the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine,” as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
The fire has engulfed areas of the Yelinsky and Tykhonovitsky forest districts and the Koryukivsky forest region.
“This involves a five-kilometer border zone near the border with Russia, to which foresters have long had no access due to the security situation,” the statement reads.
The fire was detected by the company’s video surveillance cameras.
Containment efforts
According to reports, all forest protection forces have been deployed to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to areas accessible to Ukraine.
“First and foremost, additional mineralized firebreaks are being created. The company’s tractors are operating under electronic warfare cover, as the enemy targets any equipment,” the statement reads.

According to “Forests of Ukraine,” on May 6, foresters held a joint meeting with representatives of the military, the State Emergency Service, and local authorities.
“It is important to prevent the fire from spreading to settlements in the frontline zone. All of the company’s new firefighting equipment has been mobilized. But so far, we have not been able to fully utilize it, as enemy UAVs are constantly in the air.”
Other fires caused by shelling
As a reminder, since early May, nine fires have been recorded in the forests of Sumy and Chernihiv regions as a result of Russian shelling. A total of 16.3 hectares of forest have been destroyed by the attacks.
As reported by the Northern Forest Office, all fires were caused by drones falling as a result of military aggression. The largest fire occurred in the Vertiivka Forest District in the Nizhyn region—the fire destroyed 6.9 hectares of forest. At the time, it was the largest forest fire in Ukraine. 3.9 hectares were burned in the Mekshunivka Forest District of the Chernihiv Regional Forestry Administration.”
According to foresters, due to the constant threat of repeated strikes, rescue workers were not always able to begin extinguishing the fires immediately. Despite this, all fires were quickly contained and completely extinguished.
