Turkey’s Dortyol oil terminal on the Mediterranean Sea will no longer accept cargo related to Russian oil. In this way, Turkish business seeks to avoid US sanctions, Kommersant Ukrainian with reference to Reuters.

Turkey became one of the largest importers of Russian oil after Western sanctions were imposed against Russia, but now the US sanctions pressure has increased. Turkish companies now risk being sanctioned for their cooperation with the Russians.

For example, Global Terminal Services (GTS), which operates a terminal in Turkey’s southeastern province of Hatay, has announced that it will not accept any goods from Russia.

“GTS has decided to sever all possible ties with Russian oil and accordingly announced to its customers at the end of February 2024 that even if there are no violations of any laws, regulations or sanctions, it will not accept any products of Russian origin or any products loaded at Russian ports,” GTS said.

At the same time, the company stressed that it had previously complied with the sanctions, but was now taking additional measures.

Last year, the GTS terminal received 11.74 million barrels of Russian crude oil and fuel. It became Turkey’s seventh largest import terminal by volume, up from 10th place in 2021. Imports of Russian crude oil and fuel in 2023 were about seven times higher than the total volume received from all sources in 2021.
