Hungary has returned the money and gold belonging to Ukraine’s Oschadbank

On Wednesday, May 6, Hungary returned to Ukraine the funds and assets of Oschadbank that had been seized by Hungarian intelligence agencies in March.

“An important step in relations with Hungary: today, the funds and valuables of Oschadbank that were seized by Hungarian special services in March of this year were returned,” the head of state noted.
He recalled that Hungary had unlawfully detained Ukrainian cash collectors at that time. The president added that Ukraine had secured the release of the individuals sooner, and now the funds and valuables are back in full on Ukrainian territory.
“I am grateful to Hungary for this constructive and civilized step. I thank everyone on Ukraine’s team who fought for a just decision and defended the interests of our state and our people,” Zelenskyy said in a statement.
The scandal involving the seizure of Oschadbank’s property
As a reminder, on March 6, 2026, two Oschadbank cash-in-transit vehicles were illegally detained in Hungary while transporting currency and 9 kg of gold. The bank reported that the cargo was valued at $40 million and €35 million.
The government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán launched an investigation on suspicion of money laundering, and the country’s parliament passed a law to seize these assets until the investigation is complete. Kyiv called Budapest’s actions “theft” and threatened to hold those responsible accountable.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga emphasized that all those involved in the crime will be held accountable. Oschadbank published a demand to return the illegally seized vehicles and funds, and stressed that the transport was carried out under an international agreement with Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank.

Earlier, a few days after the vehicles carrying Oschadbank’s funds were detained, the Hungarian government stated thatOschadbank’s fundswould be returned once the Druzhba oil pipeline became operational.
As a reminder , on March 6 , Ukraine secured the release of seven citizens who had been detained in Hungary along with the armored vehicles while transporting large sums of cash. They returned to Ukrainian territory and crossed the state border.
