The Ministry of Education and Science has supported a complete ban on the Russian language in schools, including during breaks. This ban applies to both children and teachers, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports with citing citing Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi.
The head of the ministry also explained that the possibility of equal development of languages of national communities does not apply to the language of the aggressor country (Russian – ed.).
“We understand that it (Russian – ed.) is used as a weapon, as a prerequisite for aggression. That is why we care about the languages of indigenous peoples, national communities and, above all, about the development of the Ukrainian language,” Lisovyi said.
At the same time, the Minister of Education believes that any decisions that protect the Ukrainian language should provide for the possibility of equal, equal development of the languages of the national communities of the European Union.
What is known about the ban on the Russian language in schools
We are talking about draft law No. 12086, authored by MP Natalia Pipa. It was registered in the Verkhovna Rada on 1 October.
The bill introduces the concept of a “Ukrainian-language environment” and obliges teachers to create and maintain it.
After the law comes into force, Ukrainian teachers will be prohibited from switching to Russian on school grounds – during breaks, in the cafeteria, and in private communication.
In addition, educators may hold educational events, encourage students to speak Ukrainian and make comments to children who speak Russian.
