Strawberry prices continue to fall in Ukraine

12 June 16:19

The arrival of warm, sunny weather is stimulating the rapid ripening of strawberries on Ukrainian farms, according to analysts from the EastFruit project, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

As a result, the supply of this berry on the market is growing rapidly, which, in turn, is causing a sharp drop in wholesale prices in this segment.

While just last week, average wholesale prices for strawberries in Ukraine did not fall below 100–190 UAH/kg ($2.23–4.24/kg), this week they have begun to decline more significantly, especially in the southern and central regions of the country. In particular, producers are currently offering this berry at a price of 80–170 UAH/kg ($1.78–3.79/kg), which is on average 15% cheaper than a week earlier.

Producers are forced to lower prices in this segment due to the rapid growth in the supply of berries from local farms, while demand for this product remains relatively stable. At the same time, most market operators note a fairly high percentage of substandard berries this season. Heavy rainfall has significantly reduced the quality of the produce.

It is worth noting that as of today, strawberry prices in Ukraine are already, on average, 11% lower than during the same period last year. At the same time, key market players do not rule out further price reductions in this segment as early as next week. They base this view on the fact that market supply continues to grow, while the quality of the berries available does not always satisfy consumers.
