From 35°C to downpours and squalls: the weather forecast for early July
1 July 02:44
The first day of July in Ukraine will be hot and mostly dry. In most regions, daytime temperatures will rise to 30–35°C, and forecasters do not expect any significant precipitation. Meteorologist Natalka Didenko reported on the change in weather conditions. The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center also released the official forecast for the coming days, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
However, as early as July 2, a cold front will approach Ukraine’s western borders. It will bring brief showers, thunderstorms, stronger winds, and a gradual drop in temperatures.
The heat will first subside in the western regions, and on July 3–4, cooler air is expected to spread across most of the country.
What will the weather be like on July 1?
According to Natalka Didenko’s forecast, on Wednesday, July 1, hot air masses will persist across nearly all of Ukraine.
In most regions, the following is expected:
- daytime temperatures of 30–35°C;
- mostly sunny weather;
- light cloud cover;
- light to moderate winds;
- no significant precipitation.
Localized brief showers with thunderstorms are possible only in Zakarpattia and in some areas in the far west of the country.
Therefore, there will be no sudden drop in temperature on the first day of July.
Weather in Kyiv on July 1
Sunny, dry, and hot weather is forecast for Kyiv on July 1.
The daytime temperature will be around 33°C.
No significant precipitation is expected in the capital. The highest temperatures will traditionally be observed in the afternoon.
Due to the intense heating of the asphalt and buildings in the city’s central districts, the temperature may feel higher than what the thermometers show.
When Will a Cold Front Reach Ukraine?
According to Natalka Didenko’s forecast, a cold atmospheric front will approach Ukraine as early as July 2.
An atmospheric front is a transition zone between two air masses with different temperatures and humidity levels.
In this case, the hot air currently over Ukraine will gradually be displaced by a cooler air mass.
The western regions will be the first to feel the change in weather.
The following are expected there:
- brief showers;
- thunderstorms;
- gusty winds;
- local downpours;
- a drop in daytime temperatures.
The official forecast from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center also predicts brief showers and, in some places, thunderstorms in the western regions on July 2.
Where the heat will ease first
Residents of western Ukraine will be the first to feel the cooler air.
This primarily includes:
- Zakarpattia Oblast;
- Lviv Oblast;
- Volyn Oblast;
- Rivne Oblast;
- Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast;
- Ternopil Oblast;
- Chernivtsi Oblast;
- Khmelnytskyi Oblast.
The exact speed at which the front is moving may vary, so the timing of the onset of rain will differ in various areas.
In some towns and villages, precipitation may be brief and localized, while nearby areas may remain dry.
When will it get cooler in the central regions?
On July 3–4, the atmospheric front will gradually move eastward.
Temperatures are expected to drop in the central and northern regions, specifically in:
- Zhytomyr Oblast;
- Kyiv Oblast;
- Chernihiv Oblast;
- Sumy Oblast;
- Vinnytsia Oblast;
- Cherkasy Oblast;
- Poltava Oblast;
- Kirovohrad Oblast.
The cooling trend will not necessarily be sudden or prolonged. It primarily involves a relief from the intense heat and a drop in temperatures to more comfortable summer levels.
In the southern and eastern regions, the hot weather may linger longer.
Why squalls are possible as the front passes
Severe thunderstorms often occur when a cool air mass encounters very warm and humid air.
Due to the significant temperature contrast, powerful thunderclouds can form rapidly.
As the front passes, the following are possible locally:
- heavy downpours;
- thunderstorms;
- squalls;
- sudden gusts of wind;
- hail;
- significant reduction in visibility.
Natalka Didenko warned that, against the backdrop of intense heat, the atmospheric front could lead to active weather phenomena.
At the same time, the location, time, and intensity of each thunderstorm can only be determined more precisely shortly before it occurs.
Will there be thunderstorms across Ukraine?
No continuous band of heavy precipitation is forecast simultaneously across all regions.
Summer thunderstorms are often localized. This means that one area may experience a heavy downpour, while just a few kilometers away there will be almost no precipitation.
The highest probability of thunderstorms on July 2 is expected in the western part of the country.
As the front moves eastward, rain may spread to the northern and central regions, and later to parts of the eastern regions.
It is advisable to check the latest warnings on the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center’s website and the official pages of regional hydrometeorological centers.

How Much Will the Temperature Drop?
A cold front does not mean the arrival of autumnal coolness.
Temperatures will drop from the current 30–35°C, but in most regions, the weather will remain summer-like.
In the western regions, the cooling will be more noticeable due to cloud cover, rain, and cooler winds.
In the central and eastern regions, temperatures will drop gradually.
After the front passes, daytime highs in some regions may drop below 30°C, though exact figures will depend on the region and the speed at which the air mass moves.
What will the weather be like in July overall?
According to the preliminary monthly forecast from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, July 2026 in Ukraine is expected to be warmer than the climatic norm.
The average temperature for the month is forecast to be:
- across Ukraine — from 21.8 to 26°C;
- in the Carpathians — from 18 to 20°C.
This is approximately 2°C above normal, and in some parts of the western regions, up to 3°C above normal.
Monthly precipitation is expected to range from 26 to 71 mm.
In the Carpathians and the Carpathian Foothills, 79–119 mm of precipitation is forecast in some areas.
Overall, rainfall may amount to only 60–75% of the climatic norm.
A detailed monthly forecast is available on the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center’s website.
