How Long Will the Heat Last: A Meteorologist’s Forecast
29 June 14:06
Forecast
Ukraine has been experiencing an abnormal heat wave for several days now. In some regions, thermometers in direct sunlight are reaching 40 degrees. Significant changes in the weather can be expected in most regions as early as July 3 and 4. This was reported by meteorologist Natalia Golenia to "Komersant Ukrainian".
“The weather will change drastically on July 3 and 4 in most regions, but the shift will begin in the west on July 2. An atmospheric front will move in, followed by cool air from the Baltic and Scandinavian regions, which will enter Ukrainian territory. For now, the heat will continue. That is, over the next three days, we’ll see hot weather with temperatures of 28–34 degrees. During the day in the west and south, there will be intense heat in some places, reaching 35–38,” says Golenia.
According to her, there may be a light shower in some regions this evening.
“The forecast for this evening indicates that if clouds form here from the north and develop into rain, there may be some light rain in some areas. In other words, there could be a thunderstorm. But this will be very localized, so to speak. Therefore, over the next few days, the east and south—and tomorrow in the Carpathians—will see unstable weather with rain. But overall, we’ll have mostly dry and hot weather over the next three days,” the meteorologist predicts.
Natalia Golenia says that after such an abnormal heatwave, we should expect downpours, and in some places, squalls and hail.
“Across most of Ukraine, there will be a change in weather conditions on the 3rd and 4th. An atmospheric front moving in from the west will bring this about. Therefore, with the rains—if our preliminary forecast holds—there will be a contrast in temperatures on either side of the front. And these temperatures will be, so to speak, the maximum—21–26 degrees. So this is a significant contrast. Consequently, these rains will be torrential and accompanied by thunderstorms, hail, and squalls,” explains Golenia.

A wave of scorching air reached Ukraine from Southern and Central Europe.
A record high temperature was recorded in Lutsk for two consecutive days.

And on June 28, the temperature in the city had already reached 36.7, surpassing the all-time high for the entire period of observations since 1947.
The previous record for this day was set in 1963 at 33.9, while the all-time high was recorded on August 29, 2023, at 36.4.
- Vinnytsia
A record high temperature was also recorded in Vinnytsia. On June 27, it exceeded the record for that day set in 2024 by 0.4, reaching 31.4.
But it was hottest in Uzhhorod. There, temperatures reached 34.6. This exceeds the highest daily temperature for that day over the entire observation period by 2.6. The previous record was set in 1994 at 32.0.

What’s Happening in Europe
A massive heat wave at the end of June swept across all of Europe and broke numerous temperature records in France, Spain, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland.
Residents are being asked to conserve water, and some transportation routes have been canceled due to the risk of damage to road surfaces and railway infrastructure.
The heat has already claimed the lives of hundreds of people.
As a reminder, the heat wave originated in the Iberian Peninsula. It will soon move toward the Balkans.
