The Czech Republic has authorized Fico’s plane to fly to Moscow for the parade

3 May 08:09

The Czech Republic has granted Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico permission to fly through its airspace to attend the May 9 celebrations in Moscow. This was reported by the Czech Foreign Ministry, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

“The Slovak side submitted a standard request for overflight permission, and it was granted without delay,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Adam Čerge.

However, he did not specify the duration of the permission.

Earlier, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia made it clear that they would close their airspace to the prime minister’s plane. Fico assured that he would find an alternative route for his visit to Russia.

The Czech Republic does not share a border with Russia, so in order to reach Russia, Fico will need permission from other countries as well, such as Germany.

Zelenskyy Wants to Improve Relations with Fico

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a telephone conversation with Robert Fico.

“I just spoke with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. Our countries must have strong relations, and we are both interested in this. It was important to hear that ‘Slovakia supports Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and is ready to share its experience of accession,'” the president noted on Facebook.

Zelenskyy added that he invited Fico to visit Kyiv and thanked him for the invitation to visit Bratislava.

“We also discussed the possibility of meeting in person in the near future. Our teams will work out the schedule,” the head of state emphasized.

Parade Without Military Equipment

The traditional May 9 parade in Moscow will be held without military equipment for the first time in a long time. The Russian Ministry of Defense attributed this to the “operational situation,” while the Kremlin cited a “terrorist threat.” Mass events on this day are being canceled across the regions.

The Baltic states have already closed their airspace to Fico and Vučić’s planes en route to Moscow

In 2025, the May 9 celebrations in Moscow were attended by leaders from 27 countries, including China, Belarus, Cuba, Venezuela, Slovakia, and Serbia. At the time, the EU warned EU candidate countries and European politicians against traveling to Moscow.

The authorities in Latvia and Lithuania also refused to allow the planes of Robert Fico and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to fly over their airspace on their way to the Russian capital. In Riga, the ban was explained by the “political sensitivity of the flight’s destination,” while in Vilnius, it was attributed to “technical and diplomatic sensitivity.” Fico was also barred from flying through Polish airspace. Estonia joined the ban as well.
